Our Congregation
History of Our Church
One of the first things early settlers did was to establish a church and school in their area, and so it was at North Buffalo. Some of our members today are descendents of those early settlers. In 1894 negotiations were taking place that would eventually lead us to our church today. Local members and a contractor from Moorhead erected our first church at the cost of $1,000.00. Later this church was sold and was moved off the church property by Howard Smith for $625.00 to be used by a small congregation in Moorhead for a short time. It stood in the area of our present Memorial Garden Cemetery.

In 1954 our present church was started and built with 90% of the work being done by men of the congregation, it was finished and dedicated in 1957. In less then a decade we had outgrown that church and needed more space for worship and Sunday School. By 1963 the east addition of our sanctuary was dedicated. The pews that we use today were purchased in 1964. In 1969 the spacious entry way that houses our library and office today was added to the church.
We pray for the faith of a grain of mustard seed that this church nestled on the banks of the north branch of the Buffalo River might prosper and remain a citadel of faith for many years to come.
Prayer and Fellowship
(left) Young people of the church purchased the kerosene chandeliers in 1902 and they still hang in our present sanctuary. The altar we have is also an original piece. The church bell that calls us to worship on Sundays is the original 900 pound bell purchased at the cost of $238.58 in 1904. It supposedly rings in a "G" tone. (right) After years of discussing a new fellowship hall and making our church handicap accessible it is now completed and was dedicated in October 2005. The leadership of our building committee and monetary gifts from many have made it all a reality. We are happy to have the beautiful new addition along with it's wonderful facilities.

The spirit of the ladies of 1899 must have been very much like our North Buffalo ladies of today. Records show many meals were served and special items for the church were purchased by them. Today our men, women and young people work together to prepare food in our new kitchen and serve many delicious dinners in our new fellowship hall.
Wouldn't the early settlers be pleased with what they began at North Buffalo Church ? What would they say about our spacious kitchen with a commercial dishwasher and a church with fine bathroom facilities ? Young and old in our church are thankful to be a part of all of this. Many memorials have been given to complete our new addition.
Quilting With Love
The members of North Buffalo Lutheran Church work together during the winter to make quilts for the area shelters and to send over seas with Lutheran World Relief in May of each year. The quilters have a potluck lunch each day that adds to the fun and fellowship. Everyone is welcome to join the fun in making about 200 quilts each year. The love, prayers and fellowship that we share as a group is sent with each quilt to warm the world.
